Le Grand Depart days 1 and 2

Day 1: Birmingham to Ouistreham. 37 km.

Short ride along the banks of the Solent from Southampton to catch the third ferry of the day from Portsmouth.

Day 2: Ouistreham to Clecy. 57km.

Nouvelle cuisine has finally touched down at L'Ecailler hotel by way of a miniscule breakfast of a 'finger' baguette and a croissant that failed to realise its life goal. (You had one job......). I'm not greedy when it comes to breakfast but it's now 12:30 and I'm 1900 calories in the red.  I am wasting away.  I tried to find a pain au raisin en route (I'm coming over all gallic now), the undisputed king of French breakfast pastries, (and if any man disagrees I shall demand satisfaction) but to no avail. So here I am in Clecy, after a short day to avoid the afternoon storms, hunting for lunch but as we are post-August, France is shut.

Eventually I discover a cafe on the banks of the river Orme serving Gratin de Nini. If you ever need to carb load then this is the stuff. Potato, cream, potato, ham, cream, potato, leeks, cheese, cream, potato. Perfect. Bread as well, of course, eaten in the English way in French restaurants: there is bread on the table, we eat it straight away, more bread appears, we eat it straight away, meal arrives, no thanks, I'm a bit full, anymore bread?

Domfront tomorrow with a morning dash to avoid the afternoon storms. Probably have bread for lunch.
